The Marvel Cinematic Universe is mere weeks away from finally restarting with Phase 4 , and Marvel Studios is bringing dozens of new names into the spotlight for the first time in new movies and Disney+ series. There are a few names returning from the Infinity Saga both in front of the camera and behind it for sequels and new properties, although one of the names that won't be taking on as expansive of a role is Scott Derrickson.

After a successful run directing Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in 2016, creative differences with Marvel's top executives led Derrickson to vacate the director's chair for 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness . He will still be involved with the movie as an executive producer while Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi takes over the reins for the Sorcerer Supreme's next solo adventure.

Derrickson recently expanded on this decision while referencing a personal vow he made over a decade ago.

In a new stream of releases on Twitter , Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson got candid about his creative experiences in the movie industry. Derrickson makes no mention of Doctor Strange 2, but his statement seemed very relevant to his departure from Marvel Studios at the start of 2020:

He continued on with another tweet, not explicitly naming names, but implicating some of what potentially happened behind the scenes with him and Marvel:

Derrickson then responded to Twitter user @keyofmgy, who said they will miss him as the director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness . Derrickson responded, indicating that his Tweets really were about his Marvel affair and revealing that he still gives his best to new director Sam Raimi as he takes on his first directorial run in the MCU:

WHAT THIS MEANS

It's starting to become a little clearer regarding why Derrickson stepped away from the highly anticipated sequel, especially after earlier reports detailed that Marvel Studios didn't want to lean as heavy into the horror aspect of the movie as originally planned. However, it's still unclear what exactly the disagreements were that he alluded to when saying the producer and director need to be on the same page,

Major players in the MCU have raved about the hire of Sam Raimi as the director for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness considering his history with both horror movies and the superhero genre. He has extensive history making scary cult classics, and he is best known for his excellent work on the Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man trilogy. He is even said to have been instrumental in bringing some of the past characters from his movies into play for the MCU's Spider-Man 3 , which will have a direct tie-in with his own MCU movie, and it will be fascinating to see how everything weaves together over the next couple years.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is in the early stages of filming and will release in theaters on March 25, 2022.
