Aquaman 2 movie background

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to open a brand new chapter for Jason Momoa's titular hero. The upcoming DCEU sequel is directed by James Wan, who also directed 2018's Aquaman. The film will also bring back Amber Heard's Mera, Patrick Wilson's Oceanmaster, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's Black Manta, and Dolph Lundgren's King Nereus.

The exact plot details are still being kept under wraps, but the title clearly suggests that it will revolve around Arthur Curry's quest to find the Lost Kingdom of Atlantis. Still, it remains to be seen why Aquaman decides to pursue this mystery.

DC FanDome 2021 gave fans a preview of the sequel, showcasing behind-the-scenes development, familiar locations from the first film, and newfound areas under the sea. Despite that, the official promotional drive for the film has yet to begin, mainly because it has a December 2022 premiere date.

While fans are waiting for the movie's official marketing push, interviews from the Momoa and the cast have surfaced online to boost anticipation for the sequel. Now, one of the film's stars has expressed his excitement about the DCEU project.

Aquaman Actor Expresses Excitement for DCEU Sequel

Dolph Lundgren, who played King Nereus in 2018's Aquaman and will reprise his DCEU role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about the upcoming sequel.

Lundgren openly admitted that the sequel is "better" than its predecessor, teasing that the "script is stronger and it's more exciting:"

"That whole picture is just a class act. Everybody from James Wan and Jason Momoa to Amber Heard and the producers. I think this one is better. I think the script is stronger and it’s more exciting."

The veteran actor continued by praising the film's director, James Wan, teasing that he would "blow everybody away again:"

"The technology has moved forward in four years, so I was really pleased to be a part of it. James Wan is just going to blow everybody away again by this tremendous world that he creates. He’s involved in every little detail, even every little piece of every weapon, and I think it’s going to be great."

What's Next for Jason Momoa's Aquaman?

Lundgren's latest comments echoed Patrick Wilson's initial remarks about Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The DCEU star previously mentioned that James Wan made the sequel "bigger and better and broader" by giving every aspect of Jason Momoa's sequel more substance.

It will be interesting to find out how Lost Kingdom will improve 2018's Aquaman. Lundgren's mention of the stronger script suggests that the story will present higher stakes while also addressing relevant environmental issues in its narrative threads.

Meanwhile, the "exciting" bit of the actor's comment could hint that Lost Kingdom would include more thrilling action sequences and intimate character moments.

Wan's passion for the Aquaman franchise was clearly showcased during the first film, and it looks like it will stay consistent in the sequel. In addition, Aquaman's visual splendor seems poised to continue, especially now that filming technology has improved over the years.

The consistent comments from Momoa and the rest of the cast should further boost anticipation for the sequel while marketing is still in the works.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to premiere in theaters on December 29, 2021.
