Tom Holland's Spider-Man 3 To Feature Jamie Foxx Returning as Villain Electro

Tom Holland as Spider-Man, Jamie Foxx as Electro

The future of Spider-Man in the MCU is uncertain, especially after the cliffhanger ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Not much is known on how the narrative of the third installment will play out, but it's a safe bet that there will be more threats against the webslinger.

Production on Spider-Man 3 has yet to start, but previous rumors suggest that cameras will start rolling next year. Still, there has been a plethora of interesting tidbits that surfaced about the highly-anticipated threequel. Previous reports revealed that franchise mainstays like Marisa Tomei and Tony Revolori will be returning alongside Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon.

Not only that, speculation about a full blown crossover with Sony's Marvel universe has been the major point of discussion among fans, especially after the looming presence of the multiverse concept. And now, news broke that a familiar face from the Spider-Man franchise will return to torment Tom Holland's version of the hero this time around.

REPORT

The Hollywood Reporter shared in a report that Jamie Foxx is "in final talks" to return as Electro in the untitled Spider-Man 3 starring Tom Holland. Foxx previously played the villain during Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

WHAT THIS MEANS

The internet-stopping reveal of Jamie Foxx returning as Electro came out of nowhere, and this development will certainly place a lot of intrigue on the upcoming narrative of Spider-Man 3. Foxx's portrayal of Electro during 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was met with mixed reviews, but the actor returning for a second time could mean that Sony wants to take another crack at the villain.

At this point, Foxx's Electro is the second villain rumored to appear in the third installment after a previous rumor revealed that Kraven the Hunter could also be in the mix. In MCU canon, having multiple villains pursue Spider-Man makes sense since the ending of Far From Home established that Peter's identity is out in the open. It wouldn't be surprising if more villains will be announced or rumored to be joining the threequel, potentially hinting that a Sinister Six team-up could happen within the film or down the line.

Interestingly, Foxx previously shared a post on Instagram alongside Tom Holland during D23 last year. This doesn't mean that talks about reprising the Electro role have been happening since last year, but this is a notable coincidence to allude to. Regardless, it will be interesting to see the dynamic between Foxx and Holland during Spider-Man 3, and this will no doubt add more hype to the much-anticipated third installment.

It's a safe bet that Foxx will not be playing the same Electro that he portrayed during The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and it will be interesting to see how this new version will fare against Holland's webslinger. However, if the multiverse will indeed be involved, the addition of Foxx's Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man franchise could hint at bigger things down the line, and it could potentially mean that Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man is not too far behind.

Whatever the case, more concrete details about Foxx's involvement as Electro will be revealed when cameras start rolling for Spider-Man 3.
