Marvel's Kevin Feige Reveals Lead Character of Eternals Movie

Even as Marvel's Eternals is shaping up to be an extremely exciting project, very little is actually known about the film. Much of the information circulating about the movie relates to the creative team behind the project. Director Chloé Zhao has been a hot topic of discussion, especially in the wake of her success at this year's Oscars , picking up three wins for her last film, Nomadland .

Much praise has been leveled at Zhao's work from within Marvel, with the President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige calling her pitch for the film the best he'd ever heard . Feige also endorsed her style , commenting on her decision to fight for shooting on practical locations.

Other information has largely spilled out from images related to merchandise for the film. A recent T-shirt design seems to tease a connection between two of the main characters. Another leak revealed a piece of concept art showcasing the main cast of the film in costume . Though Richard Madden's Ikaris takes center stage in this image, comments from the team at Marvel seem to indicate that another actor will be playing the main role in the film...

ETERNALS INFO REVEALED

In a recent interview with Variety , Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige talked about the upcoming Eternals film. Responding to questions about representation in the film, Feige noted that "the notion of switching up the genders, sexualities and ethnicities of the characters from the comics, was baked in initially."

On a more specific note, Feige also addressed the team itself, remarking that "if there was a lead in this ensemble, it is Sersi, it is Gemma Chan." Chan appeared once before in the MCU, playing Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel .

SERSI'S LEADING ROLE

Thanks to these comments from Feige, fans now know that Chan's Sersi will be the main character of the group. However, his wording is curious, suggesting that the film doesn't really have a lead, instead opts to focus on the larger team. This makes sense, considering what fans know so far about the project.

Feige's comments are especially interesting given what fans have seen from merchandise from the film so far. Most pieces of concept art or leaked imagery have placed Richard Madden's Ikaris or Angelina Jolie's Thena at the forefront, leading many to speculate that they would serve as the central characters of Eternals . However, this is likely a byproduct of Jolie's fame and Ikaris' prominence in the comics, and apparently not a reflection of their centrality to the film.

With so little known about Eternals , it is not altogether surprising that details like the lead character were initially unclear. Fans excited at the prospect of Sersi's leading role will have to wait until a better look is released by Marvel to see what the character can really do.
